Abstract:
The budget of kinetic energy of a monsoon depression over the Bay of Ben-gal has been estimated utilizing the special Observation data set obtained during 1979 Summer MONEX. It has been found that: (1)The generation term of kinetic energy by non-divergent wind is the main source term of kinetic energy. The ave rage generation rate of kinetic energy by non-divergent wind for the entire life span of the depression is 7.40w/m
2, while the average generation rate of kinetic energy by divergent wind is 0.67w/m
2.This fact indicates the significant importance of the barotropic energy transformation process. (2) For the budget of eddy kinetic energy, both baroclinic and barotropic energy transformation processes are important. In addition, the depression also acquired eddy kinetic energy from the surroundings through the boundary flux term.
