Abstract: In this paper,a diagnostic analysis of advance and retreat of the West Pacific subtropical high suggests different circulation mechanisms acting on its maritime main body and continental ridge extension.The former is consistent with classic circulation model while the latter differs from it. It is inferred that the ridge is subject to subtropical monsoon circulation,which is early indicative of the advance and retreat of the high.
