Abstract: In this paper, the space-time feature of sea surface temperature in the Indian Ocean and subtropical high over the Western Pacific has been studied by the empirical orthogonal function (EOF)analysis. At the same time,interaction between them has also been studied. It is found that the variation of sea surface temperature in the Indian Ocean has closest relation with the strengthening and weakening of the subtropical high over the Western Pacific and has some influence on the eastward declining and westward extending action of the subtropical high over the Western Pacific; On the other hand the subtropical high over the Western Pacific also has some influence on the distribution of sea suface temperature in the Indian Ocean.
