Abstract:
Seven 500 hPa teleconnection patterns for the Northern Hemisphere in early summer are determined with a one-point correlation method. They are the Western Atlantic (WA), Eastern Atlantic (EA), the Eurasian (EU), the Bengal /Northern Pacific (BNP), the Western Pacific (WP), the East Asian/Pacific (EAP) and the Yellow River/East Asian (HEA) patterns, whose centers and annual intensity indices (1951-1990) are used to examine the relationships between their interannual variations and monsoon rainfall in China. It is suggested that the EU, HEA and EAP wave trains are closely related to events of drought / flood in China. For instance, the precipitation in the east of China is strongly influenced by the HEA and EAP patterns and the heavy floods experienced in early summer of 1991 throughout the nation are associated with a weak EAP and strong HEA patterns.
