Abstract:
In this paper the single Doppler radar cubic measurments of a cold front in Europe are used to examine the possibility to retrieve the wind vectors on the vertical cross section by the VAD (Velocity Azimuth Display) method and the winds on the horizontal plane by the VAP (Velocity Azimuth Processing) method. The results show that the wind vector fields can be retrieved from the single Doppler velocity fields. The retrieved wind fields display not only the wind shear associated with the front, but also the mesoscale structures in the air mass. The analysis of the retrieved wind fields shows that the fluctuations, the observational errors and the discontinuous points of the Doppler measurments will considerably influence the results of retrieval due to the fact that the VAP method is sensitive to the variation of velocity with azimuth. In order to improve the wind field retrieval, the pre-processing technique for the Doppler radar measurments must be developed.
