Abstract:
Geographically, Singapore lies between islands of Kalimantan and Sumatra. This happens to be the common passageway for the Southwest monsoon wind in summer(northern) and the Northeast monsoon wind in winter(northern). Thus, to a large degree, rainfall in Singapore is controlled by these wind systems. In addition, as our preliminary study indicates, rainfall in Singapore is also significantly affected by the El Nino events. In this study, monthly mean rainfall data in Singapore from year 1880 through year 1989(110 years) together with published information on El Nino events were used. The time series and statistical analyses on these data have revealed some interesting rainfall characteristics pertaining to Southwest monsoon(June to September) and Northeast monsoon(December to March) seasons. The relationship between rainfall and El Nino events are also discussed in this paper. Statistical significance testing have been used to ensure validity of the discussion on rainfall variation.
